The human mind begins mapping its world very early, perhaps from within the womb. While at the same time, the human spirit is programmed to connect with the people who brought it into the world. That is when we learn, through assimilation, how to love ourselves and how to comfort for ourselves. If we don’t get the love and affection we require or if we get it in a way that is "wrong" or dysfunctional then our brains get programmed “wrong” or dysfunctional.
If we didn’t learn how to love and care for ourselves in a healthy life enhancing way as small children, it is not too late, we can learn those skills now. We must learn to love and care for ourselves, the way a loving parent or caretaker ought to have taught us to love ourselves. The way the people who brought us into the world should have (in a perfect world) We have to deprogram our brains of the dysfunctional way of not loving and caring for ourselves and reprogram our brains so that we can love and care for ourselves and learn to seek comfort from our inner self and higher power. This is no easy task, and should not be taken on lightly, but it is doable!
